Celebrating Recent Investment in Susquehanna River Walk Extension Project

Photo Credit: Pennsylvania College of Technology

On Wednesday, I joined Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn, Rep. Jamie Flick, Williamsport Mayor Derek Slaughter, Dr. Michael J. Reed, Penn College President, the Lycoming County Commissioners and officials from the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership to celebrate a $649,900 investment in Phase 1 of the development of the Susquehanna River Walk Extension.

The 5.3-mile Lycoming Creek Bikeway and the 4.2-mile Susquehanna River Walk are two trails located within the Susquehanna Greenway, a 500-mile greenway of parks, trails, river access points, and revitalized towns along the Susquehanna River.  The extension will link the Maynard Street entrance of the Susquehanna River Walk to Elm Park and the Lycoming Creek Bikeway, marking the first step in closing the trail gap. Through future phases of the River Walk Extension project, a long-term goal is to connect Williamsport to Jersey Shore and ultimately to the Pine Creek Rail Trail.

LycoCTC Celebrates $5 Million State Investment

Recently, I visited Lycoming County Career and Technical Center to celebrate a recent $5,000,000 investment awarded to them to make much needed renovations and upgrades to their current facility. Rep. Joe Hamm and I were joined by school board members, superintendents and LycoCTC student ambassadors.

LycoCTC is located on the East Lycoming School District campus in Hughesville and serves students from East Lycoming, Loyalsock, Montoursville, Muncy, Benton, and Warrior Run School Districts. LycoCTC has seen significant enrollment increases in the last few years, and the expansion project will allow them to accept more students and offer additional Career and Technical Education (CTE) programming.

Congratulations

I would like to extend my well-wishes to David Callahan, president of the Marcellus Shale Coalition (MSC), who will retire at the end of the year after decades of service to Pennsylvania’s energy industry.

As chairman of the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee, I’ve gotten to know Dave well throughout the years. He’s been an incredible friend and resource during my time as chairman and he will be greatly missed.

Jim Welty, who will assume leadership of MSC following Dave’s departure, was on hand to present Dave with a celebratory Senate Citation on my behalf. Congratulations, Dave!

REMINDER: Deadline Nears for Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program

Older adults and Pennsylvanians with disabilities have until Dec. 31 to apply for the state’s 2023 Property Tax/Rent Rebate program. Remember, assistance through my office is always free.

Income limits increased this year to $45,000 for both homeowners and renters, so if you were earning too much to qualify before, you may be eligible now. Remember to exclude 50% of Social Security when determining your income. The maximum rebate also increased to $1,000.

The program is open to residents age 65 years and older; widows and widowers 50 years and older; and people with disabilities 18 years and older.

Learn more and apply online HERE or contact my office for assistance. Check the status of your current rebate HERE. The 2024 Property Tax/Rent Rebate program will open for applications in mid- to late January.

UPMC Expands Rural Health Care Access with Mobile Health Center

Last week in Wellsboro, UPMC unveiled its new Mobile Health Center, a cutting-edge clinic on wheels, designed to bring high-quality health care directly to rural communities across northcentral Pennsylvania. This innovative initiative ensures that individuals facing transportation barriers, or other social determinants of health, receive the care they need without compromise.  Starting in 2025, the unit will have its main presence in Tioga and Potter Counties, with additional opportunities coming to Clinton and Lycoming Counties when needed.

The clinical teams manning the mobile heath center will offer a variety of services including preventative cancer screenings, health and nutrition education, first aid training, immunizations and wellness checks, blood analysis, bone density screening and more. Learn more HERE.

Tips to Stay Safe Throughout the Holiday Season

The holiday season is a special time when many of us spend time with loved ones enjoying long-loved traditions. Because these special activities can come with extra risks, taking some precautions is wise.

Candles, which cause the most fires on Christmas day, should be kept at least 12 inches from anything that can burn.

Trees should be at least three feet from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, candles and heat vents. It’s best to dispose of the tree when it’s dry or after the holiday season. Discarding string lights that are worn or damaged also protects against fires. Read more about winter fire prevention.
