Driving Safely During Inclement WeatherPennsylvania has nearly 40,000 miles of roads – which translates to 96,000 snow-lane miles – that must be maintained during inclement weather so people can travel safely. The approximately 2,200 PennDOT-owned and rented plow trucks have in-truck technology that logs and shares data in real time so the public can monitor the routes of their interstate and expressway travels on www.511PA.com. Of course, drivers should avoid the roads until they have been cleared, if possible. Anyone who must travel is urged to use extra caution by slowing down, increasing their following distance and avoiding distractions. Read more winter driving tips here. Senate Passes Bill to Honor Gold Star FamiliesIt’s important to recognize fallen service members and the families they left behind. I supported a bill that would authorize construction of a Gold Star Families Memorial Monument at the State Capitol Complex in Harrisburg. The monument would be sponsored by the Woody Williams Foundation, which was established to honor and support Gold Star Families. It would be built to reflect five main philosophical pillars of the foundation: homeland, family, patriot, sacrifice and legacy. The monument would give Gold Star Families a permanent place to gather, remember and honor their fallen loved ones. It would also remind the public of the ultimate sacrifice made by the country’s bravest patriots. If the bill becomes law, the monument would be constructed south of the Auditorium Forum Building, east of the Irvis Office Building and north of Walnut Street. Remembering Pearl Harbor“A date which will live in infamy…” President Franklin Delano Roosevelt Dec. 7 marks 83 years since the surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. After a decade of strained relations between the United States and Japan, that act drew the United States into World War II. While thousands of lives were lost, they were not lost in vain. The gruesome and exhausting war ultimately ended in a victory of Allied powers around the globe. As we enjoy our American ideals and freedoms because of battles fought and wars won, please thank a veteran for his or her service. |
