Yaw, Pickett Announce PENNVEST Funding for Towanda Municipal Authority

HARRISBURG – State. Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23) and State Rep. Tina Pickett (R-110) today announced a $7,736,520 state investment awarded to Towanda Municipal Authority, Bradford County through the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) for improvements to its wastewater treatment plant.

Funding awarded today will be used to construct a new headworks building with new fine screening units and grit removal equipment. The project will also include the demolition of the existing building and the rehabilitation of the existing ultraviolet disinfection system, as well as the repair or replacement of air supply piping, tank piping and pumps. Other improvements include upgrades to the communication and electrical systems.

“As we look at the aging infrastructure of many of our local communities, it has never been more important to support their efforts to improve water quality through upgraded systems,” Yaw said. “Ensuring our communities are equipped to properly handle wastewater is good for our citizens and good for our environment and I was pleased to support this important investment.”

“I am in full support of this PENNVEST grant, which will make critical improvements to Towanda’s wastewater treatment system, enhancing service for hundreds of customers,” Pickett said. “The project will ensure more efficient operation and also avert a steep rate increase for residents. This state investment will help to stabilize costs while improving environmental safety and service reliability for the entire community.”

Yaw and Pickett noted the existing system serves nearly 2,000 residential customers throughout Towanda and Monroe Boroughs, as well as Towanda, North Towanda, Monroe and Wysox Townships. Funding for these upgrades will help curb future rate increases for consumers.

PENNVEST was established by Act 16 of 1988 and is an independent agency of the Commonwealth providing financial assistance to fund the construction of drinking water, sewer, and stormwater projects in communities throughout Pennsylvania.
