HARRISBURG –Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23) recently visited Prysmian Group’s Williamsport facility to discuss its $22.5 million manufacturing expansion. Prysmian, a world leader in the energy and telecommunications cable industry, was recently awarded a $135,000 Pennsylvania First grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), along with additional funding from the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority (PIDA) and the City of Williamsport.
“Not only will these investments bring good-paying jobs to the area and boost the local economy, but they are also a critical component for ensuring the reliability and resilience of the U.S. power grid,” Sen. Yaw said. “Right here in Williamsport, Prysmian is helping to connect Pennsylvania to the world.”
Prysmian’s expansion includes a 51,000-square-foot addition to the existing building to create more manufacturing space, and a retention pond to handle increased stormwater run-off. The expansion will create at least 27 new family sustaining jobs in Lycoming County and retain 407 jobs statewide. Once completed, it will double Prysmian’s capacity to manufacture advanced transmission conductors with E3X® technology and increase the amount of power that can be moved without adding to the physical footprint of a transmission line.
“Expanding our Williamsport facility allows us to meet the increasing and changing needs of the power transmission and distribution market here in the U.S.,” David Horton, Plant Manager at Prysmian’s Williamsport facility said. “We are thrilled not only to make this investment in our facility but also for the employees who contribute their hard work to our organization daily. Without them, we would not be able to make this significant impact on our region.”
Prysmian manufactures thousands of miles of underground and submarine cables and systems for power transmission and distribution, as well as medium and low-voltage cables for the construction and infrastructure sectors. The company also produces a comprehensive range of optical fibers, copper cables and connectivity systems for voice, video, and data transmission for the telecommunications sector. The company operates 28 manufacturing plants across North America, including the Williamsport facility.
