HARRISBURG – The state Senate this week unanimously approved legislation that would establish a grant program to extend deployment of broadband services in underserved areas of the state, according to Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23).
Senate Bill 835 enacts the Unserved High-Speed Broadband Funding Pilot Program Act. This bill authorizes the Commonwealth Financing Authority to administer, receive and award grants for the program. Eligible grant awardees must be a nongovernmental entity that must commit a minimum of 25% of the company’s private capital to finance the project.
“Access to broadband, especially for those who tele-work, senior citizens, fire and emergency workers and students who are taking classes remotely has become even more crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Sen. Yaw said. “I was happy to support this important piece of legislation that will certainly benefit our rural residents.”
