HARRISBURG – State Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23) and State Rep. Jamie Flick (R-83) today announced $330,000 has been awarded to two projects in Lycoming County through the Commonwealth Financing Authority’s (CFA) Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program.
“Funding for these projects will undoubtedly benefit our region and have a positive impact on recreational opportunities,” Yaw said. “I am pleased to see these important investments in Lycoming County and I’m grateful to Rep. Flick for his collaboration.”
The Authority awarded $250,000 to support the Susquehanna River Walk Extension Trail Construction Project. Completion of the four-mile, multi-use trail will make key connections in the greater Williamsport area and the surrounding communities, including connections to the Lycoming Creek Bikeway and Susquehanna State Park. The Susquehanna River Walk Extension is part of a regional effort to complete the Triple Divide Trail, a 400-mile trail from Lake Ontario, New York to Chesapeake Bay, Maryland.
“I’m thrilled to see this funding go towards projects that encourage residents and visitors to enjoy outdoor recreation in our community,” said Flick. “This project closes another gap in the trail system along the Susquehanna River. The extensive network of trails invites tourism and boosts our economy. It also invites locals to get outside to experience the area’s natural beauty and health benefits of being active outdoors.”
Additionally, $80,000 was awarded for improvements to Young’s Woods Park, including the development of a walking trail with senior exercise amenities, bike racks, a rain garden and facilities for pickleball.
“Funding for the Youngs Woods Park Improvement Project will greatly enhance what is now a small neighborhood park, and bring it to full ADA compliance,” Flick continued. “From upgraded play equipment to better parking and access, this park will better serve the neighborhood residents and families from surrounding areas.”
The CFA was established in 2004 as an independent agency of the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) to administer Pennsylvania’s economic stimulus programs. In 2012, the Marcellus Legacy Fund was created and directed natural gas drilling monies to the CFA for planning, acquisition, development, rehabilitation and repair of greenways, recreational trails, open space, parks and beautification projects using the Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program (GTRP).
