Yaw: Center for Rural PA Holds Summer Board Meeting in Elk County

HARRISBURG – On August 24th, the Center for Rural Pennsylvania held its annual board meeting at the Elk County Visitors Center in Benezette, Elk County, according to Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23), who chairs the Center’s Board of Directors.

At the board meeting, Ta Enos, founder and CEO of the PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship, walked board members through a short history of the PA Wilds, which began under the Ridge Administration. The PA Wilds has robust plans to work with communities throughout the region to grow entrepreneurship, tourism, recreation, and businesses, in general.

Center Board Member Susan Snelick, president of Northern Pennsylvania Regional College (NPRC), which is a publicly funded higher education institution in northern Pennsylvania, hosted the meeting and gave the board a tour of the surrounding area. NPRC partners with the Community Education Council of Elk and Cameron Counties to offer both degree programs and workforce training and development programs.

The board was also able to see the process involved in powder metal manufacturing first-hand at Horizon Technology, a cutting-edge supplier of powder metallurgy parts that has been operating in the county since 2001.  “Powder metal manufacturing has strong roots in Elk County and employs a large part of the county’s workforce,” Yaw noted following the tour.

The board also had the opportunity to meet with officials of the City of Saint Marys, which is celebrating its 180th anniversary this year.
